How to Get the MPH Job of Your Dreams by Completely Bypassing the Classifieds

October 20, 2015 by Amy Stevenson Wilson in Get an MPH Job

My job searches in the past have involved a lap top, a browser, pages of mediocre job openings, and a resume black hole. Sound familiar?

Dan Miller in his book 48 Days to the Work You Love offers a different approach. He says that it’s possible to find the job of your dreams… without it ever appearing in the classifieds.

This proactive, creative approach to job searching is what led me to my first MPH job. I read Dan’s book and was intrigued by his ideas because, frankly, my entire job search experience had been exactly what he said not to do. I gave it a whirl and it worked!

As Dan recommends, I began by researching outstanding health promotion companies in the area. I reached out to dozens of them and this led to informational interviews with these organizations. Even though many were not hiring at the time, three months later when my top-choice corporate wellness company had an unexpected opening, guess who got a phone call…yours truly! I interviewed and got the job.

I’ll let you go to 48 Days to the Work You Love to get the details on Dan’s recommended process, but here is a summary:

“The most effective job-hunting method is this:

Know your skills
Research the potential companies that use those skills
Arrange to see the person who has the power to hire you
Request the interview”
— 48 Days to the Work You Love, page 103

Searching for work can be tough, but it’s much more empowering when you are in the driver’s seat creating your opportunities instead of waiting around for that perfect job to show up on your search engine.
